How to Stay Grounded During Divorce: Finding Peace in the Eye of the Storm

With all the political tension, economic uncertainty, and global unrest in the news lately, I’ve found myself reflecting on a line from Brandi Carlile’s song The Eye:

“You can dance in a hurricane, but only if you’re standing in the eye.”

That lyric speaks deeply to how I’ve been approaching life lately—intentionally choosing to not get swept up in the storm. Instead, I ground myself in the present moment. I limit my media intake, lean into self-care, and prioritize practices like movement, meditation, and stillness. I remind myself that right now, in this moment, things are okay. I am okay.

And I realized: this mindset is just as powerful when applied to divorce.

Divorce can feel like a hurricane. Whether you initiated it or not, the process can be chaotic, emotional, and overwhelming—especially if you’re navigating divorce from a high-net-worth marriage where you weren’t previously involved in managing the finances. You may feel pressure from your soon-to-be ex-spouse. There might be tension with attorneys. There are financial decisions you’ve never had to make before. And on top of all that, there’s the emotional toll of transition and grief.

But even in the midst of that storm, there is a place of peace. A place where clarity lives.

I call it the eye of the hurricane.

When you’re in the eye, you’re not reacting to every jab, email, or curveball. You’re grounded. You’re calm. You’re making decisions from a place of strength, not fear. And yes, it takes intentionality to get there—but it’s absolutely possible. And it’s powerful.

At Purposeful Wealth Advisors, we specialize in financial planning for women going through divorce, particularly those in high-asset marriages who now find themselves making complex financial decisions for the first time. Our clients are often navigating divorce later in life, unsure where to begin, but ready to take control of their financial future.

We help them find their center. We help them stay focused on what matters, not what’s loud. We provide a clear, step-by-step financial strategy so they can confidently move forward. Because when you’re grounded in the eye of the storm, you can make smart, informed decisions that help preserve your future—and your peace.

If you’re currently navigating divorce or preparing for it, here’s my encouragement: You don’t have to match the chaos. You don’t have to spin with the storm. You can pause. Breathe. Re-center. Choose clarity over conflict. Choose support over isolation. Choose peace.

Because yes, you can dance in a hurricane—
But only if you’re standing in the eye.
